Pour another cup of hot tea and bundle up for the next adventure of the proud and impoverished Crispin. Intricately written mystery adventures, but I'm freezing in the hungry dark with him. This time he unravels an assassination plot against Richard II (totally fictitious). Honor demands that he defend England's king and thus he earns a chance to regain his knighthood. After such a dangerous and torturous path through murders and accusations will he kneel for this same king?

I just finished Serpent in the Thorns A Medieval Noir by Jeri Westerson the second in the series about disgraced knight Crispen Guest. She really fleshed out Crispen in this second offering. Crispen is called to a murder by a simple girl who believes she has killed a French courtier who has come bearing a gift to King Richard II, the gift is not stolen however and it is nothing less than "the" Crown of Thorns. It is all about betrayal in this installment. I see Crispen easily becoming one of the historical hunks, honorable underdog you can't help rooting for. 4.5 stars

Return to the life of The Tracker, Crispin Guest, who finds a young woman in his room. The woman asks Guest to help her because there is a dead man in her room. She declares that she killed him. Guest know that this is highly unlikely because the man has an arrow in his chest. Next to his body is a chest which holds a crown of thorns. The man is French, a courier.
The arrow in the courier's chest is identical to one shot at Crispin and at the sister of the young woman. A chest by the courier has a crown of thorns inside, supposedly the one worn by Jesus. As Crispin investigates an attempt is made on the king's life. Crispin is certain that another attempt will be made at the king's banquet. He stops the attempt but is caught with the bow in his hand and accused of the attempt. What happens next is for the reader to discover. Good, quick read.
