Not equal to The Watchman, but a very solid, well above average entry in the Joe Pike series. While Crais's prose is leaner, sharper and better than ever, and his plot has plenty of twists and turns, it lacks the depth of character shown in the first Pike book. There were times when I thought it read like a cleaner, sharper version of A Time to Hunt by Stephen Hunter.
The plot here is one of Crais's best so far. Complex and surprising, but his 'villain' creates some confusion in the opening chapter. It took a bit of trust in Crais to wait and see where he was going with that bizarre start. It's worth it - and if you miss the key sentence that explains everything about this character late in the book, it will stay confusing.
A really good, rather fast reading thriller devoid of clutter and distractions. Liked the ending.

I haven't read a Robert Crais book I didn't love. Joe Pike is just as good a character as Elvis Cole. I also enjoy visiting some of the places the author describes when I am in LA.
Not quite the best in this series, but a good solid read nonetheless from a writer who keeps getting better.
I Love the new Joe Pike series, it really shows some humanity in Pike while maintaining his mystique and smart tough guy exterior.

Another great Cole & Pike adventure, with a deeper insight to Joe Pike. A great read and exciting continuation of Joe & Elvis's lives and fighting the "good" fight.
I liked this book because it's featured Joe Pike, with his friend Elvis Cole as a secondary character. A good page turner.

Wonderful story. My heart tugs for Pike. Well written and suspenseful and lovely character development.
Fabulous story. Many exciting twists and turns, along with considerable emotional depth. Highly recommended.
Really good book.Love Robert Crais. One of my favorite authors. This book was picked up from Goodwill, it does smell like smoke. Plus it is a smaller version, but it is a complete book. It is in good shape
Really enjoy this series from Robert Crais.
