My children read this book and because we had a death in the family did not want younger siblings to read it. It is realistic of slavery and deaths.

This is a warm loving story based on true events. Susanna Fairchild's parents and his sister Clara leave Missoula Territory via New York harbor by ship for the Oregon Territory. Ma dies during the voyage to San Francisco and all hands included their Doctor Papa leave for the Gold Rush outside Sacramento , California. Dad is a doctor not a miner so he finds. Both 14 year old Susanna and 16 year old Clara find their true love in the Gold Rush camp. They arrive in the Spring and dad wisely in fall has them go onto Oregon Territory. Unfortunately Gold Rush Fever separates those you thought were your friends from those who are true friends. The whole family has many lessons to learn.
