"If you forget, i'll come after you. If you forget god help you." Alison warned him twenty years ago. Before the endless days and nights of fear came to Arden, Wisconsin. twenty years ago to the day. Now Miles has returned. But the townspeople have not forgotten what happened when the two lovers swore their oath. Nor has Miles forgotten. He knows that if Alison keeps her vow, he will not be meeting the maddening seductress of his youth but a demon of savage appitite and a heart made monstrous by revenge.
The best ghost story that I've ever read!
A gripping horror novel about a man returning to his old home town in search of everything he has lost twenty years after sharing a moonlit skinny dip with his beautiful cousin. But the landscape he once knew has turned eerie and threatening. And the love he shared has become very, very deadly.
Straub's book, "If You Could See Me Now" is a refreshing, literate mystery. I think Straub is a cut above other mystery writers in the U.S. since he writes literate skill so well. This may frustrate readers who are used to their mysteries/thrillers reading like roller coasters. Straub manages to write so well though that his plots and characters take on a life of their own. This book is not one of Straub's best but I still enjoyed it. Like most of Straub's books, there is a supernatural element within the plot. A thoroughly enjoyable read!
Haven't read this in a while but remember it as pretty scary and I love the author!!
From the back of the book:
One summer night, a boy and his beautiful cousin plunge naked into the moonlit waters of a rural quarry. Twenty years later, the boy, now grown, flees the wreckage of his life and returns to ARden, Wisconsin, in search of everything he has lost.
But for Miles Teagarden, the landscape he had known so well has turned eerie and threatening. And the love he shared has become very, very deadly...
