Summary: Ex-Marine Caden MacTavish has shunned his magical heritage all his life, but he will do anything to heal his desperately ill brother, a Doomsday Brethren warrior in mourning for his missing mate. Posing as a photographer, Caden must convince firecracker tabloid reporter Sydney Blair to reveal the source of her recent exposé on a supernatural power clash. Unfortunately, keeping his hands off the sizzling redhead proves as hard as getting them onto the potent and mystical Doomsday Diary he discovers at her bedside. A bloody rebellion led by an evil, power-hungry wizard is imminent. If Sydney divulges the book's existence, she will jeopardize magickind's most deeply guarded secrets and become the ruthless wizard's number one target. Caden has never trusted magic's cruel and dangerous powers, but he will protect Sydney with his life and magicâeven if it means risking his heart.

This is the second book in the Doomsday Brethren series. The main character are Caden and Sydney. First, I have to say the alpha males in this book are crazy protective. I understand why, but some of it seems a bit over the top for me, the are even worse than the Black Dagger Brothers when it comes to their women folk. The plot was pretty good...kept moving forward. I am really starting to hate this Mathias guy even more with each book, he is like "He who shall no be named" times 1000. Its pretty bad, he is the villain of villains. The sensual scenes in this book were pretty steamy, but a tad bit slow to get going as opposed to the first book in this series. I do think someone should have bashed Caden up side the head with something hard to knock some sense into him about his adversion to magic. His friends and family are dying...why wouldn't you use all of your given abilities to do something. Overall, not to bad, I liked the first book in this series better as of right now...we shall see what number three holds.

Ok, I admit I wasn't going to read the rest of this series, but left with little else to read, I read on. There is an actual story moving along in this series, not a great one mind you, but there is a story. I like the first book better than this one, I didn't get attached to this couple. But I was given the first 3 books in this series, so i figured i should read them in order to be able to follow the story. Mathias is still on the loose, and the Brethren are still grasping at straws to find a way to defeat him. Same plan as the first book, sort of. But I disliked the part of the story regarding energy surrogates and Sabelle using her body to help Lucan. It all seemed a little barbaric and the repeated use of the term "mounting" when referring to a sexual encounter takes all the romance out it. (and don't get me started on the actual titles for these books) I hope the next book is better...

This series is the adult version of Harry Potter to a T. The funny thing is that Harry Potter is even referenced in this book. If you can get past that, then the series is worth reading.

Good read. Although there's lots of action in this book, the focus is on relationships: Caden's relationship with magic and his relationship with his brother and the woman he is sure is his mate and Sydney's [a human reporter] relationship with Caden and the reality of magickind and the ongoing war.

Caden wants nothing to do with magic although he is expected to be a very powerful wizard. He left his family, magic, and England behind him when he was 18-becoming a marine and living only as a human. Now he has returned because with his brother's lifemate ripped away from him by Mathias, Lucan has gone mad with mate mourning. To get help from the Doomsday Brethren, Caden agrees to fight with them. He is assigned to shut down Sydney [a reporter on the Brit equivalent of The Enquirer] who has been writing stories about magickind. There are many complications: the missing wife is Sydney's source, Sydney acquires the Doomsday Diary, and then there's the sexual heat between them...

For what it's worth, I have this book (same ISBN: 9781416578444) but it's a hardcover, not a mass market paperback as listed above. Go figure.

I'm embarrassed to say that I don't remember a single thing from the first book ([book:Tempt Me with Darkness|2770316] other than I gave it 5 stars because I read it too long ago. As with all series books, there are certain elements of the world building that come right back but the personal injuries done to the characters, that's harder for me to remember. This book started with something that I don't recall at all so I was a little behind the times from the get-go. However, even without knowing why or how it happened, it wasn't difficult to jump right back into the Doomsday Brethren's fight with Mathias D'arc.

I really liked Caden MacTavish and his fight against magic use was heartfelt. Magic had done him wrong and he was loathe to forgive and forget until of course the magic affected his mate. Reporter Sydney Blair was obsessed with proving Magickind existed and her reports are what draw Caden to her. When he realizes she is his mate, he does everything in his power to resist since he doesn't want to draw her into the magic life and trap her there if that isn't what she wants. But like all heroes and heroines, they don't talk about the important stuff and where a word here or there would have solved the problem, nothing was said and they both suffered needlessly.

The tale was believable (so to speak) until Sydney goes to the dungeon to interview Zain and suddenly the bars of his cage mysteriously weaken and he breaks out and kidnaps her. Come on, what the hell are the chances of that happening. All in an effort to get the heroine in danger so Caden could rescue her and finally put his feelings into words. With a war going on, I'm sure something more in keeping with the story could have been developed. This just kind of blew the 5 star rating for this book. I really did love it up until this point but this was just too ridiculous to believe.
