Nancy Drew arrives in Phoenix, AZ, eagerly looking forward to a fun-filled vacation at Shadow Ranch, but abruptly finds herself involved in a baffling mystery. The ranch is being haunted by a phantom horse & maliciously damaged by an unknown enemy. Local people believe that the ghostly animal is carrying out the curse of Dirk Valentine, the romantic outlaw who was killed many years ago at Shadow Ranch, where he had gone to fulfill a promise to his sweetheart.

Suspecting that a treasure hidden by Valentine may be at the root of the Shadow Ranch mystery, Nancy undertakes a challenging search, aided by her friends Bess Marvin & George Fayne. The first vital clue is found in an antique watch & sparks a series of clever deductions & dangerous developments. While seeking further clues, the girls' investigation in a ghost town ends in a near disaster when Nancy is trapped inside a building that is toppled by a rockslide--a rockslide which is deliberately caused. But the pretty titian-haired detective remains undaunted in her determination to solve the mystery.

I think this book was great. Bess & George were great, just like the games. (8/8)

This story starts when Nancy and her "chums" visit an Arizona ranch. They meet a girl on the train whose father has disappeared. Once they reach Arizona, the find an orphan girl living in a remote cabin with a cruel guardian. And then people at Shadow Ranch report a ghost horse is running around at night. Could the three mysteries be related? Find out when you read THE SECRET AT SHADOW RANCH. Only Nancy Drew could solve this one - and you know she will! It's worth the extra money to buy this reprint instead of the 1960's version...this is the original text as it was in the 1930's.

This great book starts with excitement and mystery, and never really lets up. There's a "phantom" horse (of course Nancy figures out what it really is!), bad guys, good guys, a treasure concealed where only our heroine Nancy can find it...
