"To understand money we must see its symbolic value. This book gathers together stories and myths from around the world, from the present and the past, that reveal money as a marker of issues of the human heart and soul. The subjects of the stories revolve around money, or sometimes gold or even food, but the themes are about our nature, our inner richness, and our connection to other people and to community."
The author delivers what he promises but for me it was not of much interest. My copy, obtained from a PBS comrade, is a first edition, twenty-five years old, AF in AFDJ, and I wonder if there were sales enough to warrant a reprint. I will leave it at the VA Clinic in Little Tokyo, where it is sure to find an interested reader in the waiting room (no TV and not even one magazine when I left a couple there yesterday).
The author's highlights of debtors prisons was interesting as was the recounting of Thos. Jefferson's financial problems. Pt. Jefferson was deep in debt for decades and Monticello was sold a few years later for $7,500. Without labor to make a crop, plantations had little value. Thus Geo. Washington is remembered as an excellent manager.
J.Q. Adams did not find it easy to earn enough in the service of his country to support the basic necessities as Ambassador and I regret that today's critics endlessly disparge Jefferson. His dinners are recognized by historians for the value they brought to the nation.
