Really excellent biography, written more like a novel than most. The author shows a remarkable connection with her subject and the pictures are fabulous. The Lonely Doll is now on my to-search for list.

A biography about a glamorous (and later reclusive) New York writer/photographer/model written by a stranger from second-hand accounts -- yet still engrossing. There are lots of photos by and of Dare Wright, but sometimes the author goes into great detail about something I wished was pictured but isn't. Dare Wright published ten Edith & the Bears books plus travelogues and other children's books.
The Lonely Doll series:
The Lonely Doll (1957)
Holiday for Edith and the Bears (1958)
The Doll and the Kitten (1960)
The Lonely Doll Learns a Lesson (1961)
Edith and Mr. Bear (1964)
A Gift from the Lonely Doll (1966)
Edith and Big Bad Bill (1968)
Edith and Little Bear Lend a Hand (1972)
Edith and Midnight (1978)
Edith and the Duckling (1981)

I found Dare Wright's life totally intriguing and sad. A woman so full of talent, beautiful, sexy, ethereal...a life totally ruled by her mother. A very strange and perverse relationship. A fascinating story that leaves you feeling like Dare's life could have been so much more...

An intriguing biography! Dare Wright was a fabulously talented children's author, photographer, and model but had an incredibly sad life due in large part to her mother's total domination. Such a strange, melancholy life...
I love eccentrics, but they never seem to make good ends, do they? This was an intriguing biography and kept me up half the night, but watching the aging process of a woman who was notable for her fey, childish nature is like watching a car crash in slow motion. What a downer. Also, I could have done without the multi-page synopsis of one of the fairy-tales Wright wrote. Man, did that go on forever. Still, it was fascinating, and I want to track down a number of Wright's books after reading this.

Amazing back story about the author of a very interesting set of books for children from the 1950s and 60s.

This is one of the best biographies I have read in years. It tells of Dare Wright's sad, strange life. A life that should have enjoyed fame from modeling, writing & photography, was tarnished due to the domineering instincts of her mother.
