Heres an invigorating change from Poirot and Marple. Tommy and Tuppence are introduced as amateur sleuths. In post-WW I they happen into a case of espionage and international intrigue that began with the sinking of the Lusitania. Caught between the government and left wing organizers led by the ultra-mysterious Mr. Brown (no relation to Chestertons Father Brown), they search for Jane Finn and a packet that could have drastic implications for the British Labor market. Although an interesting but not a high-powered novel, it could be taken as a somewhat tongue-in-cheek look at the political situation. Tommy and Tuppence are sort of British Mr. and Mrs. North, Nick and Nora Charles, et al. The Tommy and Tuppence books mature with their own aging. You may also want to read (in order) N or M? (WW II espionage) and Postern of Fate (Cold War shenanigans flashing back to WW I).

What you don't know might kill you! For instance, the case of Jane Finn, a woman missing for five years. Undercover investigators Tommy and Tuppence know that she was carrying top secret documents. They know that the only photo of her is in the hands of her rich American cousin. What they don't know is that a sinister older woman knows all about Jane--and therefore must die. And worse, the killer knows where to find Tommy and Tuppence.

The first, I believe, of the Tommy and Tuppence spy stories. I don't like any of them, but some people do. They rely too much on the cute characters and plucky spirits of their two dimensional heros.
