Like its predecessor Genesis Quest, this is a hard SF novel, but also like it, tries hard and fails. This one deals with an exodus of 20,000 or so humans on an intergalactic voyage on a Dyson Tree. Since they're immortal and traveling at nearly light speed, it passes in the 'blink of an eye' of 500 years or so, outside its nearly 37 million years. When they return to the Milky Way, they encounter the remnants of human civilization (specifically the radio that broadcast the human genetic code to the universe at large) and two successor civilizations.

This could be interesting, but the author gets a little too cute with a reason for mass extinctions, plus the same character flaws as before in Genesis Quest.

2 stars.
