Those who enjoy science fiction will love this story of a group of astronauts sent to Mars to explore the planet and, in the process, determine why the team of Russians sent there years before never returned. Lauren Wagner is chief medical officer, and the main character of the book. She is caught in a web of intrigue as she and her crew arrive on the red planet to find that perhaps its not as uninhabited as scientists once believed. This is no story of little green men, however, but rather a story about two races that lived long before the Earth existed. Pike superimposes Laurens story with that of the Asurians and Sirians, and what results is a story of past lives, of death, and a fight to save the world from an evil force that dominated long ago.

This book is excellent. I couldn't stop turning the pages. I've always been a Pike fan and he's really done a fantastic job on this one. This book gets a 10/10

I am usually a huge fan of Christopher Pike but I found it very difficult to get into this book. It was relatively slow to start and I was not able to relate to any of the characters even after getting through a few chapters. My biggest issue with this book was that it was written over 15 years ago (1992 I believe) but is set in 2002. I found the exaggerated "futuristic ideas" ridiculous and distracting. Overall, this book was a major disappointment to me and I was only able to get through about half before I just gave up.

Dr. Lauren Wagner is among a crew sent to Mars to explore and find out what has become of the lost Russian expedition before them. They soon learn that Mars is a dead planet, but craves life - theirs.

The story of the crew is intertwined with the story of Asurians and the Sastra, who are two ancient races battling for control of the Garden. It's story about love, life, death and immortality.

This book combines science fiction with fantasy, folklore and horror. I am not normally into 'sci-fi', so I was a bit skeptical when I started reading. The first chapter had me hooked and I couldn't put the book down. I would suggest it to anyone - a definite must read.

I recently re-read this book because I couldn't remember it at all, which either means I never did read it, or it was very forgettable. However, I did enjoy it. I am generally not "into" Sci-Fi, but it is well-written and kept my interest. There are a couple of parallel stories, that the reader can see intertwining before the author spells it out. The only disappointment was one lingering loose end that didn't get fully explained in the end. Otherwise, an interesting read.
