I read the part where he was in China, 1938 to 1944. Apparently, his big break came when he was hired as an information officer by the Koumintang in 1939 just as the war was hitting its stride. His priority was definitely hob-nobbing with the famous and so-called powerful (in China, they were the ones that spoke English), he had a couple of interesting forays at the battlefront of North China in 1939 and the Honan Famine of 1943, but he seemed to have have been reticent to say much about those maelstroms (perhaps admirably, since his grasp of the language was weak and the information could be contradictory) compared to his interviews with Chou En-Lai, Douglas McArthur and General Stilwell. Maybe he had more to say in his early articles for TIME.
