Scrawny's mother is no ordinary duck!

John crawled silently to Scrawny's box. Then he lifted his head. "Duck, duck, duck."

Scrawny peeped and waddled toward him. John crouched lower and crawled to another side. He popped his head up again. "Scrawny!" The duck trotted gleefully over to him.

Ms. Saunders explained. "Newborn ducks become attached to the first moving thing they see--usually the mother. That's why they follow their mother in a line."

Andrew pointed at John and laughed. "Scrawny thinks John is his mother!"

From the moment he was born in John's third-grade classroom, Scrawny seemed to like John most of all. Now everybody expects John to save Scrawny whenever the duck is in trouble--which is most of the time.
