The central figure here is Arthur Milton, a middle-aged history head at an English higher school. His wife leaves him, he is suspected of killing her new lover, and he suffers through most of the book because he may have killed a girl 20 years before.

This reminded me a bit of Ruth Rendell when she writes as Barbara Vine, though it was much less fully written. It was a psychological setpiece, capturing the important bits and pieces that made this main character what he was. The story is about a teacher who is living a purposefully humdrum life whose wife leaves him, setting a much larger change in motion. It involves a murder some 20 years ago, and the teacher's role in that. When his wife leaves and he is put on leave from school, he changes his name and moves to a run-down boarding house, from which he searches for the truth about the past. Sometimes it was a little confusing as it moved from one scene to another, but overall I thought it was quite good.
