This is such a delightful series, taking place in 1924 Colorado. Theo Barnes is back from his medical studies and is apprenticing with Emerson Pass' doctor. He slips back into the fold of the Barnes family easily.

Louisa Lind was taken in by Rev. Lind and his wife fourteen years ago. However, the town is growing, and there are new voices in the church who want a different minister. Some see Rev. Lind as too compassionate; they are looking for more fire and brimstone. When the parish council suddenly fires Rev. Lind, he has a heart attack and dies.

The Barnes quickly come to the aid of Louise and Mrs. Lind. They have to move out of the parish rectory and have nowhere to go. So the Barnes family quickly deposits the two in a guest house on their property.

Theo has always been in love with Louise, but Louise was always fond of his twin. So when Flynn marries, Theo decides to see how Louise feels about him. Louise tells Theo a dark secret that helped her choose never to marry. Theo has scars, too, left from his years in the war and finding his mother when she died. But, slowly, the couple decides that they can heal each other.

This story was predictable but charming. The author's ability to explain complex human emotions is intriguing to read.
