In his books "Making Faces" and "Face Forward", the late Kevyn Aucoin transforms some famous and some not-so-famous people into the images of others, providing a brand-new look for a familiar photo. Lisa Marie Presley into Marilyn Monroe, Susan Sarandon into Bette Davis ... and many more.

In her book "The Scent of Almonds & Other Stories", Camilla Läckberg takes the familiar setting of Fjällbacka from her Patrik Hedstrom / Erika Falck series and provides the tales with different looks. One can see influences from Agatha Christie, Guy de Maupassant, and O. Henry, to "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" from the early days of television in the 4 stories told in this book. (Other readers may see different influences at work, depending on their own reading history.) Unlike Aucoin, Läckberg isn't blatant you don't think "holy , it's like they're twins!" but rather, more of a "... that kind of reminds me of ..." sensation. And it feels more like a tip of the hat rather than any sort of plagiarized thing.

I do not recommend this book as an introduction to Camilla Läckberg's Fjällbacka, but I do recommend to those who have already visited the literary version of her hometown and would like a different glance at the area and its residents.

RATING: 4 stars.
