The author interviewed over a hundred members of the cast and crew. The film cost nearly $4,000,000 to make and promote. It is explained how David O. Selznick had to sell it to MGM.
The novel itself sold for a hefty $3.00 and Selznick paid the extraordinary price of $50,000 for a first novel.
Reading this forty years after publication, I find it stands up well. No copies posted or wished for, so I took it to the old soldiers' home.
It is printed on fine paper stock, indexed, and the captions on the well chosen and numerous photos are great.
