When Sierra's husband decides to uproot the family and move because of a job opportunity without consulting her, she is resentful and gives him a hard time. Separately, she finds an old diary of a relative who had to travel the Oregon trail because her husband wanted the free land offered and discovers parallel situations. Do these marriages survive?

This Author never ceases to impress me! Story is of 2 generations and the issues that seem overwhelming, mistakes they make w/ decisions until they begin to see the direction God is taking them and the need to turn everything over to him. How healing of emotions and acceptance happens!

story interesting in two generations. I found the modern one a bit pat and convenient. Why in the historical one is it assumed that w/o birth control a woman would be pregnant every year, actually very unusual due to breast feeding. The review of Rahab's story is good, every woman should be familiar with her story and it is time that men learned it, also. God's grace is HUGE it is not by chance that her story is in the Bible.

This is an excellent book.
When Sierra discovers her young ancestor's handcrafted quilt and reads her journal, she finds that their lives are very similar. By following her ancestor's example, she learns to surrender to God's sovereignty and unconditional love.

Franice Rivers has done it again. Wonderfully written story.
Sierra Madrid - Woman of today. Bold. Determined. Her life is about to be turned upside down.
Mary Katheryn McMurray - Young Pioneer on the Oregon Trail. She is filled with anger at being uprooted from her home.
Two women, centuries apart, are joined through a tattered journal as they condent with God, husbands -- even themselves -- until they fall into the arms of the One who loves them unconditionally.

This was my first Francine Rivers book and I loved it. I'll be looking for more of her books. Sierra life starts to fall apart when her husband takes a new job with a computer company and moves the family away from their home and family without consulting Sierra first. Her mother sends her off with the journal of Mary Kathryn McMurry, a young pioneer on the Oregon Trail who like Sierra, is on a journey chosen by her husband without considering Mary Kathryn's wish to remain in her childhood home. Throughout the book the two womens lives parallel with trials and tribulations including a distrust of God for letting them get into the possition of dispair each is in. The story is full of humor and realistic life situations and written tastefully. It's like getting two stories in one book that meld together with the Scarlet Thread running through it.

This has been the hardest of all the Francine Rivers books that I have read. Maybe because it's easier to imagine how I would react had I been in Sierras situation. I would have liked to have had more insight into Alex's inner world as the story was told, not just at the ending. But as Francine Rivers always does she has challenged me and reminded me that God will make all things work for good.

This has two stories in one and very historical. Very good read and one sees how faith can be victorious.
Francine Rivers writes good Christian Fiction, once I start one of her books I can't put it down. This one is no exception. This book interweaves two stories: Sierra and her Ancestor who came to california by Wagon. It tells a similar story between the two thru troubles, tragedies, and hard times; how they grew in their relationship with God and in love with the Men in their lives. A great Read.
Read it and then read it again - it was just that good!
this book was wonderful- recommend it to anyone especially those with Christian beliefs
Best book ever!! Such a wonderful story to be told. Would recommend very high
It's a great book!
I just finished this book. It is another book that is hard to put down. I love Francine Rivers but in this story it feels a little like she glosses over the marriage struggle. The author writes about people and their spiritual life so well it's easy to read the story and identify with the characters. This is a great book.
The only reason that I did not rate this book higher was that it was set in the Valley near where I live. I like to read about far away places or historical novels. If you have not been to Hollywood or the Valley you might like this book.
Excellent book by a consistent author.
Terrific book... Like reading two books at the same time... Francine Rivers has really how done herself... smile...dg
Was recommended to me by a friend. I am sure it will be good but haven't gotten to it as of yet.
One of my favorite Francine Rivers books - it will make you think, it will make you cry, and it will make you rejoice!
Another great book by Francine Rivers. I have yet to read one of her books that I can't put down.
I just finished The Scarlet Thread by Francine Rivers. I am so glad that I read it. It starts out rather slowly and takes a bit of determination to get past the unpleasant beginings. But if you will hold on you see the character development. It parallels the spiritual development as well. THis is NOT a predictable book and the two stories in one format is complex enough to hold your interest on so many levels. How do lifes trials influence us? Do they draw us closer to the Lord or farther away? I recommend this book!
great book. love francine rivers
Rivers has woven the stories of Sierra ane her great-great-great grandmother Mary Kathryn into one riviting novel.
