England, Mid 1800s
Cute story about a friendship turned romance. The hero knows what he wants from the beginning, but the heroine has yet to see the light. They are engaged (for pretend) to save her from an unscrupulous villan (which I think will turn into a hero in another book) due to a scandalous act from the past.
It was a pleasant story with a good romance. I believe the hero and heroine are one of three "couples" who spread out to have their own stories, in an attempt to decide which of the three ladies was the model for a portrait hanging in a men's club in London.

I am really enjoying this series, and of course loved the stories of the male's of this family prior in the Scandal's Son series. I was interested to see how Peter Darby was going to play out in this book since he had a negative persona per se in Never Marry a Stranger. I was also curious to see that he was matched with Elizabeth Cabot versus Susannah Leland who in past books reference was made to a time he had dated her, etc.

I enjoyed this story & also enjoyed the new secondary characters such as Peter's sister Mary Jane and the previous suitor Thomas. There were also some new bachelor's introduced in this book that I am curious to see if we will hear more on them in the future. Again she has a few surprises at the end for you regarding romance & marriages.

This book still focuses on the painting but in a different aspect. Can't wait for the final book involving Susannah & Leo.

Weak plotting and too many characters "rolling their eyes" ruined what could've been a fun book. It didn't start getting good until page 204. For the first 200 pages, the leads did nothing other than think the same things over & over again.

The introduction of a secondary romance spiced things up, but also made the heroine seem boring by comparison. I liked the first installment of this series much better.
