Coming of age novel about 19 year old anorexic Ruth and her once uber-popular brother David. Takes place over the course of a summer in their small hometown in Alabama where they are both working as lifeguards at the local swim club. Ruth's whole family has problems - she's not eating, her brother isn't talking, her Dad is sleeping in the den and her mom is oblivious to everything.

The book was a pretty fast read and you do end up liking all the characters. Everyone is better at the end than they were at the beginning. I'd recommend it.

A friend gave me this book, and I didn't realize it was YA until I started it. It somehow seems more immature than other YA books I have read. So much cliché. That said, I didn't finish it because it just wasn't my cup of tea.
