Sarum lived up to the standards I have come to expect from Rutherford's books. His research of the history he writes of is worth reading it alone. The fact that there is a fine story
line just makes it that much better. I recommend Sarum, and his other books highly. Guaranteed once you complete one of his books you'll go on to the next and ...

I bought my copy when I was in England visiting the area. It really helped pull everything together. He is very similar to James Michener in that he starts in the very early prehistory and focuses on several families through the generations. I have read several of his other books and have the rest on my TBR list. You cannot go wrong with his books!

The story of one town in England, from the ice age through the twentieth century. Over a thousand pages. Good read.

In Sarum, Edward Rutherford creates a masterpiece of breathtaking scope - a brilliantly conceived and superbly written epic novel that traces the entire turbulent course of English history. From primitive beginnings almost 10,000 years ago to the medieveal world of knights and ladies, from the bloody civil war to colonial preeminence in the nineteenth century, right up until the present day, this is a magnificent story that until now has never been told.
This rich tapestry weaves a compelling saga of five families - the Wilsons, the Masons, the family of Porteus, the Shockleys, and the Godfreys - who preserve their own particular characteristics over successive generations and reflect the changing character of Britain. As their fates and fortunes intertwine over the course of the centuries, their greater destines offer a fascinating glimpse into the future.

I loved this book, and I'm not a history buff. I've kept it for years because I want to read it again, but w/2 young ones, it'll be awhile before I can tackle 1,000+ page novels.

Historical fiction at its best

This is a novel set in England near the Stonehenge monuments. It is intriguing and may be one of the most memorable books you have read in a long while. It is far from a short book, but coming into the summer is the perfect time to set aside time for reading. Enjoy!

Ready Sarum was interesting because I felt as if I really was living in the historical backdrop he wrote about. Very good read.
