For Sam: The True Story of a Dog That Changed Everything
For Sam The True Story of a Dog That Changed Everything Author:Rick Dupuis I have said many times that I told Sam I loved him everyday. That is true. But Sam also told me the same thing every day that I knew him. I could see it in his eyes every time he looked at me. I could feel it every time he got up on the sofa next to me and put his foot on my arm or shoulder. And when, in the middle of the day I’d lay down on the sofa and he’d get up and lay down behind me and put a front leg over me as though to hug me as he fell asleep. Sam knew what was important and I am so blessed for having known him. I talk to him every day. Not a single night has gone by since his death in which I did not look at his picture and say, “Dad loves you. And I miss you so much. Good night Bud.” It’s funny. I started to cry as I wrote those words. I do that a lot and I hope I always do because as long as I cry when I think about him, it means he’s still here and I never want to lose that. Sam’s life wasn’t very long by our standards or even by the standards of other dogs. But his life meant so much. Our family laughed almost every day of Sam’s life. The heartache I feel at his loss is so small compared to the love that Sam left in his passing.
Am I angry with God for giving Sam so many obstacles to overcome? Not at all. Do I wish he wasn't so sick and in such pain for most of his life? Maybe a little, but I am also thankful for those same hurdles. If not for them, Sam might not have been the dog he was. Do I ask God why Sam died? No. I thank God every day that Sam lived.« less
