I love when stories take what typically is a kind, innocent fabled creature and turns them dark and impure. In this story we find a mermaid who can be as cruel as she is beautiful. As she wanders along in this tale with her Plague Doctor we find a beautifully demented love story.

I savored every exquisite word printed in this novella. The journey started out a bit confusing for me and it took me a little bit to get settled but once the couple came upon children in the frigid forest, things picked up for me and the tale became disturbing yet exciting.

This was my first book by Khaw. I will definitely be looking into delving into her other works.
