Absolutely hauntingly written, with many, complex religious ideas. Reading this was like being the first car in a train; I watched other cars (ideas, characters) added on, one by one, each different and strange, but slowly growing used to them. At one point, I looked back and saw an insane mess and realized the train was about to crash. And it does - no one in this book remains untouched by the emotions and actions of another person. Recommended for lovers of complex ethical and love entanglement stories.

Priests and underage surfer boys, pregnancies, miscarriages, abortion, famous and infamous saints, midlife crises, teenage angst. The female protagonist touches all those bases (or is touched/broadsided by them) as Callanan shows us life seen through the eyes of a fiftyish Catholic school teacher still looking for love after 3 divorces.

It started strong, and then left me hanging. While the theological points were interesting, I felt like the story dragged.
This is a strange book. I was surprised to read that other readers felt the male auther really understood how women feel, because I had a really hard time identifying with the main character in this book. She makes a long series of bad and illogical choices that leave you saying, "So then she did WHAT? How on earth did she come to THAT conclusion?" On the other hand, I've known women who put two and two together and get three, so maybe.... She is like a teenager in an adult body. Nevetheless, it wasn't a bad read.
