Thomsen is one of those "best authors you never heard of". He was a Peace Corps volunteer, a farmer (first here, later in Ecuador), and a navigator on a bomber during World War Two, flying missions over Germany. I've never read a better description of what that must have been like than in his book My Two Wars. The Saddest Pleasure deals mainly with travels through Brazil.
