This is a scholarly work and not an easy read, but I think it is a valuable book for anyone wanting some insight into James Madison's role in the creation of our Constitution. Banning challenges some theories of earlier historians who believed Madison's point of view shifted dramatically from the time of The Federalist to the split between the Hamiltonian Federalists and the Jeffersonian Republicans.
