This is more like it! The mystery was center stage. If there was any background info I needed, it was carefully woven into the story. There were no long passages about how Victorians lived, worked, or played. Thank goodness. That being said...As usual Ms. Perry ended the story with unanswered questions. I felt like I have been left hanging until I read the next book. We'll see if I get any answers? Still working my way through this series.

My favorite quote from the book: "Was it possible that no matter how ugly, or how expensive, the facts were better? The truth deals only one wound, but suspicions a thousand".

Despite the seemingly never ending moralizing by the 'quality' Pitt and Charlotte manage to get through to the horrible truths behind the crime.

As always, Ms Perry's books are an interesting look into an era where women had so few options.
