Fleming's Bond books leaped into prominence in the early 1960s when it was reported that President John Kennedy enjoyed them as leisure reading. The Bond movies, of course, have been film behemoths for 50+ years.
If you are familiar only with the films, hosever, you're probably in for a disappointment with source material. I found this a truly dreadful book -- tedious, misogynistic, and utterly devoid of the sly campy humor of the movies. Fleming does have some skill at describing the exotic locales, but this is not a book I would have finished if it were not part of a reding challenge.
