You know that crazy uncle who bought all those books on why you didn't have to pay taxes back in he 80s (before the guy who wrote them claimed insanity as a defense for not paying his taxes)? Well, guess what Uncle Goober is gettin' the relative's kids for X-Mas this year? Probably this book.

The good: The story is okay and it has some fun bits of history .

The bad: America's favorite rotund radio host uses a kids book as a way to advertise his line of bottled tea beverages (not kidding). He does other odd things like have kids think about how much they want to pay in taxes, which is a thinly-veiled recruiting technique (as you read it, you can't help but think of Peter Graves in Airplane creepily ask Billy if he likes Gladiator movies). Also, the book doesn't feel like a real book -- there is no reason for every page to be glossy, the back cover looks like a vanity press photo usually only seen on religious and sales books, and every illustration looks like it was the editor's first time using PhotoShop.

Overall, not a great book, not a great package, and not a great message. And if you think this is the lesser evil of kids books, that the kids will have to suffer though the politic to get to something that deals with history, then you simply do not understand that there is a plethora of apolitical, historical-based fiction out there for kids.
