Another very good entry in the Jane Whitefield series about a Native American guide who helps people obtain new identities and a new life. I recently read the fifth book in the series, Blood Money, which I was a little disappointed in because it seemed to stray from focusing on Jane and was more of a straight crime novel about the doings of mafia thugs. After a several year hiatus, Perry returns to his Whitfield novels and Runner is definitely back in the right direction. In this one, Jane comes out of retirement to help a young 20-year-old pregnant woman named Christine, who is being pursued by the baby's father, Richard Beale, who wants her back because Christine knows too much about his embezzlement of company funds. The company is owned by Beale's parents who turn out to also want the baby so they can raise it to take over the company. Jane is able to guide Christine out of danger, in a fast and furious escape, then teaches her how to stay safe. But Christine makes a big mistake and is recaptured by six professional hit people hired by Beale. When Jane finds out Christine has been taken she goes on a mission to find her and her baby.
I really enjoyed this outing from Perry. It was fast paced and included some unexpected twists along the way. And Jane was portrayed more along the lines of the earlier books in the series, as the savvy Native American woman who uses the skills she learned through her Seneca heritage. I'll be looking forward to reading more in this great series.

Not the best of the Jane Whitefield novels, but a good read nonetheless. I recommend the earlier books in the series, however, as an introduction to the character.
Love the Jane Whitefield series. Some are better than others but, so far, I've enjoyed every one.
For more than a decade, Jane pursued her unusual profession: "I'm a guide . . . I show people how to go from places where somebody is trying to kill them to other places where nobody is." Then she promised her husband she would never work again, and settled in to live a happy, quiet life as Jane McKinnon, the wife of a surgeon in Amherst, New York.
But when a bomb goes off in the middle of a hospital fundraiser, Jane finds herself face to face with the cause of the explosion: a young pregnant girl who has been tracked across the country by a team of hired hunters. That night, regardless of what she wants or the vow she's made to her husband, Jane must come back to transform one more victim into a runner. And her quest for safety sets in motion a mission that will be a rescue operation - or a chance for revenge.

I really liked this book and can recommend it to anyone. When I read it, I fully became inv old with the lives of both the runner and the person helping her. Good book.
Intense!!!
