When a friend loaned me this book, I read the plot summary and wondered how a civil trial could possibly be as good as a typical Grisham plot of criminal behaviors. Well, I was hooked pretty quickly. Grisham's talent as a storyteller is evident, because I was able to keep up with all the different backgrounds and opinions of the jury members with no effort at all. I was worried that I'd not be able to keep track of the jury members, but Grisham made them each a unique being, and their manipulation at the hands of the jury-tamperers was fascinating to watch.
When I read this book back in 2003, I commented that I never thought it could be made into a movie, because how could someone bring all these characters to life as well as they were done on the page? It has been made into a movie now, so I suppose the next step is for me to watch that.

Just like all of Grisham's books, great read, fast paced.
If you like Grisham, you will enjoy this book.
Grisham does it again, A++
Great Book by John Grisham. The cover is the original brown cover not the one with the actors. Great read!
12 men and women at the center of a multimillion-dollar legal hurrican who have been investigated, watched, manipulated and harassed by high priced lawyers and consultants who will stop at nothing to secure a verdict.
I did not enjoy this book that much, but he is such a popular author, perhaps someone else will. Storyline was o.k., I just expected better writing, a more informative book from this author.
book is old, but still readable.
Exciting tale with lots of twists and turns ...
Good book, I like John Grisham.
Some profanity marked out.
Very good book. I always enjoy reading John Grisham's legal thrillers and this one did not
disappoint.

Phenoinal book! a little slow with the caracter development, but a masterfully crafted book.

Terrific Read.
The classic story from Grisham. A group of people are battling the giant tobacco company.
This was a story about the transgessions of a tobacco company in the movie that was presented a year or two ago. Well, so much for Hollywierd. They made the movie about a gun manufacturer.

Spectacular court room drama.

Just became a John Grisham fan. Had a few not necessary words. Was written so that it is so believable that it has truly happened. Would not surprise me that it has. About a law suite against tobacco company's and one juror that was a plant to control the outcome.
Exciting tale with lots of twists and turns ...
I am not a big Grisham fan but this one was pretty good
So far, this is one of my favorite Grisham novels. It's engrossing, a page-turner, realistic, and of course it's well-written
Great suspense based in the court system.
GREAT book! Recomended for anyone, but especially intriguing to those who smoke or know someone that smokes.
Great book and a great movie!
Its Grisham what else do you need to know. Great understanding of the court system. If you like his other work be sure to read this one as one of the better ones.
I really enjoyed the book, hard to put down! I finished it in just a few days, and even though the subject matter has some distasteful elements (corruption, undermining the legal system, manipulation of innocent people) it was very well written and really interesting. The movie was great, which prompted me to read the book, and the book definitely provided a level of detail, background and sophistication that wasn't possible in a movie. I definitely recommend this, whether or not you see the movie.
This was a very exciting book and you got to see the inner workings of the case. I have been on jury duty this year and I could relate to that. Also the picking of the jurors and what the lawyers do to pick the jurors they want and all the investigating they do. The plot kept you wondering what was going to happen next.
This is a great book with lots of great plot twists and mispreceptions. But if you are somewhat liberal in policitcal thought, you'll love this book. If not it's still a great book.

Excellent I could not put it down. Great ending!
Another GREAT Grisham suspence novel... Could not put it down once I started it!
As good as all Grisham books are!
I was up all night reading this one.
A jury must make a decision in the civil trial of the century: a lawsuit against a tobacco company. But only a handful of people know the truth: that the jury has a leader, and he holds the verdict. He has planned every move with the help of a woman on the outside. The truth about this juror is about to explode!
John Grisham writes the best books. This is one of the best. You will enjoy it.
About a jury that is in charge of the verdict for a civil trial of the decade and juror #2 is in charge, everything is about to explode in a cross fire of greed and corruption.
Classic Grisham. Great storytelling. Couldn't put it down--I should have known--it happens with all his books! Have fun--read it on the weekend, or you won't get any sleep during the work week!
Another Grisham must-read. Suspenseful - will keep you up all night. Find out who's on the jury. "Grisham's most addictive courtroom thriller."--The Seattle Times
Good! Suspense, humor
Typical Grisham, not his best in my opinion.
A good book with lots of surprises.
This is the best Grisham yet! If you haven't read him yet, you're really missing out on this one!
I've read this one at least twice - a great read about a civil suit on a tobacco company. I think they made it into a movie.
Great book.
Much, much better than the movie - the movie changed from the tobacco company being the bad guy to gun manufactuers - the book was better!
better than the movie
It is the ultimate financial giant battling the average joe. The courtroom drama was riveting. A real page turner.
Way better than the movie. I really liked this Grisham - better than a lot of his others.
a great read! the book is better than the movie was

Great book, intense!
The book that the movie was based on. The industry is different (smoking vs guns). Great Grisham.
excellant reading
I wish I could say it was well worth the wait, but I can't.
I read THE RUNAWAY JURY for a TBR (to-be-read) potluck activity in my online book club, The Reading Cove. It had been in my TBR pile for many years, so I was glad to finally be picking it up to read with a book buddy!
I found this 370-page legal procedural to be mind-numbingly tedious. The sloooow pacing of this story, about a couple who insinuates themselves into the jury of a major lawsuit against the tobacco companies, sucked every bit of tension from the plot!
Oh, and it was dreadfully predictable. The big finale "shocker" in the final pages was so transparent, Stevie Wonder saw it coming years ago.
I'm glad to finally have this off my TBR pile, but I cannot recommend it unless you enjoy VERY slow-moving and predictable courtroom dramas. C-.

Another winner by Grisham!
Great book.
Can a jury be manipulated or controlled? Read this story of a landmark tobacco trial with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake set in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Suspense and humor. Fun intriguing read!
The movie does this book no justice! It's a thriller.
Very good book, Grisham is on top of his game once again!
JG is great. You'll love this one.
In Biloxi, Mississippi, a landmark tobacco trial with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake begins routinely, then swerves mysteriously off course. The jury is behaving strangely, and at least one juror is convinced he's being watched. Soon they have to be sequestered. Then a tip from an anonymous young woman suggests she is able to predict the jurors' increasingly odd behavior. Is the jury somehow being manipulated, or even controlled? If so, by whom? And, more important, why?
Loved this book. John Grisham is always a great read!
In a Mississippi Gulf Coast town, the widow of a lifelong smoker who died prematurely of lung cancer is suing Big Tobacco. Enter Rankin Fitch, a dark genius of jury fixing, who has won many such trials for the tobacco companies and who foresees no special problems here. Enter also a mysterious juror, Nicholas Easter, whom Fitch's army of jury investigators and manipulators can't quite seem to track-and his equally mysterious girlfriend Marlee, who soon shows Fitch she knows even more about what's happening in the jury room than he does. The details of jury selection are fascinating and the armies of lawyerly hangers-on and overpaid consultants that surround such potentially profitable (to either side) cases are horribly convincing. The cat-and-mouse game played between Nicholas, Marlee and Fitch over the direction of the jury quickly becomes hair-raising as the stakes inch ever higher.
Pretty good book. Well done Mr. Grisham.
John Grishom gives us a story of Jury tampering, the ever-evil lawyers, and so much more. The trial involves a tobacco lawsuit, so of course it gets ugly. A great book.

Very smooth read
I really enjoyed reading this book.
Amazing movie, amazing book. Grisham is one heck of a story teller and this is one of the best books I've read in a long time.
This book was the basis of a great movie, and now here is original version of the story - the jurors are in the center of a multimillion-dollar legal hurricane, 12 men and women who have been investigated, watched, manipulated and harassed by high-price lawyers and consultants who will stop at nothing to secure a verdict. The jury must make a decision in the most explosive civil trial of the century, a precedent-setting lawsuit against a giant tobacco company. But he has a name, a post, and he has planned his every move with the help of a beautiful woman on the outside. Now, while a corporate empire hangs in the balance, while a grieving family waits, and while lawyers are plunged into a battle for their carrers, the truth about Juror #2 is about to explode, in a cross fire of greed and corruption - and with justice fighting for its life... If you saw the movie, you haven't really seen the real story in this book.
Of course, who would be disapointed by a Grisham book? Once again, a great read.
A lawsuit against a large tobacco company and one corrupt juror as only Grisham can tell about it and the result of the trail.
Great story....
So tne movie so did not read the book, but my guess is it would be much much better, and the movie was great.

The making of the jury decision in a trial. Excellent book by Grisham made into a movie.
The book was much better than the movie, minus no Jon Cusack, but the plot was better. Unlike the movie, its about cigarettes not guns. I liked it a lot
a quick escape and easy read. I love John Grisham.
its in good shape by there are a lot of creases on the back bone
Another strong story by great author
Grisham's Runaway Jury takes law on a wild chase --
The John Grisham novel, The Runaway Jury, follows the twists of a case as the jury's behavior becomes increasingly bizarre. Or is it being manipulated?
The case is a tobacco trial, with millions of dollars under consideration. The plaintiff is the victim's widow. The venue is Biloxi, Mississippi which is believed to have favorable tort laws. (I just read about how some states are magnets for certain kinds of big-settlement cases, depending on that state's laws. Some are great for victims of faulty products, due to stronger consumer laws.)
The jury is convinced it is being watched, and not just by the press. A high-powered consultant to Big Tobacco is watching the jurors and plotting ways to either buy the verdict or get jurors bounced off the case. One juror is blackmailed, one juror's spouse is blackmailed. Another is bribed with a cool $10 million.
But is money and dirty play enough to insure the verdict that the tobacco company wants? Surprises come along the way and you will have to read it to find out what those are.
The movie based on the book changed the subject of the lawsuit from tobacco to firearms.

It keeps you suspended.
