When a friend loaned me this book, I read the plot summary and wondered how a civil trial could possibly be as good as a typical Grisham plot of criminal behaviors. Well, I was hooked pretty quickly. Grisham's talent as a storyteller is evident, because I was able to keep up with all the different backgrounds and opinions of the jury members with no effort at all. I was worried that I'd not be able to keep track of the jury members, but Grisham made them each a unique being, and their manipulation at the hands of the jury-tamperers was fascinating to watch.

When I read this book back in 2003, I commented that I never thought it could be made into a movie, because how could someone bring all these characters to life as well as they were done on the page? It has been made into a movie now, so I suppose the next step is for me to watch that.

Multimillion dollar case with both sides trying to secure the verdict
they want, by what ever means. Each side has a different reason for
what they're willing to do. Excellent book, Grisham has written a
courtroom thriller that is addictive. Persuasively detailed. Filled
with suspense. You can't put it down.

This was a story about the transgessions of a tobacco company in the movie that was presented a year or two ago. Well, so much for Hollywierd. They made the movie about a gun manufacturer.

They are at the center of amultimillion-dollar legal hurricane: twelve men and women who have been investigated, watched, manipulated, and harassed by high-priced lawyers and consulants who will stop at nothing to secure a verdict. now the jury must make a decision in the most explosive civil trial of the century....

I really enjoyed the book, hard to put down! I finished it in just a few days, and even though the subject matter has some distasteful elements (corruption, undermining the legal system, manipulation of innocent people) it was very well written and really interesting. The movie was great, which prompted me to read the book, and the book definitely provided a level of detail, background and sophistication that wasn't possible in a movie. I definitely recommend this, whether or not you see the movie.

This was a very exciting book and you got to see the inner workings of the case. I have been on jury duty this year and I could relate to that. Also the picking of the jurors and what the lawyers do to pick the jurors they want and all the investigating they do. The plot kept you wondering what was going to happen next.

This is a great book with lots of great plot twists and mispreceptions. But if you are somewhat liberal in policitcal thought, you'll love this book. If not it's still a great book.

I wish I could say it was well worth the wait, but I can't.

I read THE RUNAWAY JURY for a TBR (to-be-read) potluck activity in my online book club, The Reading Cove. It had been in my TBR pile for many years, so I was glad to finally be picking it up to read with a book buddy!

The Verdict?

I found this 370-page legal procedural to be mind-numbingly tedious. The sloooow pacing of this story, about a couple who insinuates themselves into the jury of a major lawsuit against the tobacco companies, sucked every bit of tension from the plot!

Oh, and it was dreadfully predictable. The big finale "shocker" in the final pages was so transparent, Stevie Wonder saw it coming years ago.

I'm glad to finally have this off my TBR pile, but I cannot recommend it unless you enjoy VERY slow-moving and predictable courtroom dramas. C-.

In Biloxi, Mississippi, a landmark tobacco trial with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake begins routinely, then swerves mysteriously off course. The jury is behaving strangely, and at least one juror is convinced he's being watched. Soon they have to be sequestered. Then a tip from an anonymous young woman suggests she is able to predict the jurors' increasingly odd behavior. Is the jury somehow being manipulated, or even controlled? If so, by whom? And, more important, why?

In a Mississippi Gulf Coast town, the widow of a lifelong smoker who died prematurely of lung cancer is suing Big Tobacco. Enter Rankin Fitch, a dark genius of jury fixing, who has won many such trials for the tobacco companies and who foresees no special problems here. Enter also a mysterious juror, Nicholas Easter, whom Fitch's army of jury investigators and manipulators can't quite seem to track-and his equally mysterious girlfriend Marlee, who soon shows Fitch she knows even more about what's happening in the jury room than he does. The details of jury selection are fascinating and the armies of lawyerly hangers-on and overpaid consultants that surround such potentially profitable (to either side) cases are horribly convincing. The cat-and-mouse game played between Nicholas, Marlee and Fitch over the direction of the jury quickly becomes hair-raising as the stakes inch ever higher.

Grisham's Runaway Jury takes law on a wild chase --
The John Grisham novel, The Runaway Jury, follows the twists of a case as the jury's behavior becomes increasingly bizarre. Or is it being manipulated?
The case is a tobacco trial, with millions of dollars under consideration. The plaintiff is the victim's widow. The venue is Biloxi, Mississippi which is believed to have favorable tort laws. (I just read about how some states are magnets for certain kinds of big-settlement cases, depending on that state's laws. Some are great for victims of faulty products, due to stronger consumer laws.)
The jury is convinced it is being watched, and not just by the press. A high-powered consultant to Big Tobacco is watching the jurors and plotting ways to either buy the verdict or get jurors bounced off the case. One juror is blackmailed, one juror's spouse is blackmailed. Another is bribed with a cool $10 million.
But is money and dirty play enough to insure the verdict that the tobacco company wants? Surprises come along the way and you will have to read it to find out what those are.
The movie based on the book changed the subject of the lawsuit from tobacco to firearms.
