Although readers know the outcome of this very famous case, Jeffrey Toobin has written a fascinating insider's look at the main characters. Understanding the background of the major players helps the reader comprehend why things happened as they did. The defense attorneys turned the double murder case into a race-based issue and won. â The surprising thing is that the defense attorneys talked widely that that was their plan, yet the LA prosecutors seemed to be clueless until it happened.

The tragedy of the book, for me, was to see the appalling impasse America is in with regards to race. I thought Henry Louis Gates, Jr.'s observation was telling: " ... black indignation at white anger at black jubilation at Simpson's acquittal."

One of the things I find valuable about reading a book about a crime or a court case is that the whole story is told at one time, helping the reader to see the entire thing from beginning to end. Jeffrey Toobin spent time explaining the meaning of the Simpson court cases. I found his lawyer-and-journalist's perspective to be fascinating.
