San Francisco Chronicle basketball writer Vic Worsley, known for his love of the game, his insightful columns, and his acerbic wit, is sacked after he does a column viciously maligning the Warriors' coach. This looks like yet another sign that his life is in free fall. He feels middle-aged and wasted, with nobody and nothing to love except his memories of the past glories of the game. But then Ruby, an octogenarian ex-schoolteacher from nearby Oakland, convinces him to meet her adopted son, Spear, a 27-year-old seven-footer and the undisputed master of the court in the toughest part of town.
