ISBN 0395464773 - Since she was a baby, Ruby's slept with her best friend, Besty. Besty is a quilt her mother made for her and Besty keeps Ruby safe from the serpent beneath her bed. One night Ruby can't sleep because Besty is drying on the line, so she sneaks out to get her best friend and they have an incredible adventure. On the very last page, Ruby's gone under her bed to get something - a sign that she's getting over her fear? Maybe!

It's a nice story, particularly for kids who have those serpents under their beds (or in their closets). Of course, parents who freaked out about the magic in One Dark and Scary Night (A Little Bill Book for Beginning Readers) will find the exact same magic here - another magic quilt keeping another child safe at night. If this bothers you, Ruby's not for you. Neither is childhood, I think, but I digress. The illustrator is not identified, but there's no real loss there - the illustrations are okay, nothing more.

Worth the few minutes it takes to read as a bedtime story to the child and his or her Besty in your house!
