Very good book. A page turner. I couldn't put it down; read it in one 24-hour period. Well written, lots of twists and turns.

While competing in a fishing tournament in a remote area of northern Minnesota, he gets a call from Lucas Davenport to investigate a murder at a nearby resort, where a woman has been shot while kayaking. The resort is for women only, a place to relax, get fit, recover from plastic surgery, commune with nature, and while it didn't start out to be a place for many with Sapphic inclinations, that's pretty much what it is today. Which makes things all the more complicated for Virgil, because as he begins investigating, he finds a web of connections among the people at the resort, the victim, and some local women, notably a talented country singer, and the more he digs, the more he discovers the arrows of suspicion that point in many directions, encompassing a multitude of motivations" jealousy, blackmail, greed, anger, fear. And then he discovers that this is not the first murder, that there was another, seemingly unrelated one, the year before. And that there's about to be a third, definitely related one, anytime now. And as for the fourth...well, Virgil better hope he can catch the killer before that happens. Because it could be his own. Filled with the brilliant plotting and compulsively readable prose that are John Sanford's hallmarks, Rough Country is another immensely satisfying tale by one of our very best suspense writers.

I am biased! John Sandford's Virgil Flowers is a great character, no Davenport but almost

No real reason to review, if you read Sandford, you are a fan. . .. so we read them all, right ?

This is a newer hero with Virgil, a Davenport protege, sorta. . .

A few too many characters, muddled up the story line somewhat for me, at least it didnt read like a movie script. Also seemed like a longer read than most, no real"juice" for the reader, but that gives more time to enjoy reading. . .so 4 stars.

Side note: and with PBS no great expence lost on a hardback or new paperbook

Thought I was caught up with the "Prey" novels and then Sanford hit it again with 3-4 with Virgil Flowers a spinoff from the others. I loved them all.

This book is another John Sandford best seller for all the right reasons. Virgil Flowers works for Lucas Davenport with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension as an investigator. He's tough, hard-working, dedicated, and sensitive, all rolled up into a tall, good-looking package who doesn't take crap from anyone. Rough Country is a story about betrayal, murder, a talented bi-sexual singer, anger, jealousy, and all set in the beautiful, yet rough country in northern Minnesota. There are twists and turns everywhere throughout this book and just when you think you have it figured out, John Sandford throws a wrench into it and keeps you guessing right up to the very end. I had trouble putting this book down and eagerly await the next Virgil Flowers novel.

Sanford has done it again. His latest book starts with a lady thinking about finally realizing her dream and becoming head of her company and how to make the bottom line work by eliminating jobs. She is in a canoe looking at an eagles nest when she is shot. Virgil Flowers is interrupted in the middle of a fishing contest by Lucas Davenpot and must go to investigate. There are a lot of people in line as lead suspects. The dead lady is very wealthy. She is going to take over her company and people know there will be job cuts. An undiscovered singer needed her to hit the big time. Is there someone who doesn't want this to happen? Is someone jealous of her affairs? The burning question, will Virgil ever ease his sexual tension? The book has everything you would want in a mystery and is very well-written as all of Sanford's books are. It grabs you at the very beginning and keeps up until the last page.

It was ok. The story line was hard to get into and the characters seemed a bit on the underdeveloped side. Good ending though. Not one I saw coming anyway.

Love the Virgil Flowers series. He's a whole different animal than Lucas Davenport. A sense of fun mixes with the darker plot elements. Twists and turns, always with a wry smile on Flowers' face. Each of these ends with a bit of a surprise. Highly Recommended.

WOW terrific it drew me in within the first couple of pages and I admit I could not put it down. WARNING do not start this book if you have to go to work in a couple hours it will be tough to close and set down until you can begin the story once more.

Sandford is one of my son's favorite authors. I got the book for him, so I can't do an actual review. My son usually reads the "Prey" series and this was the first of the "Virgil Flowers" series he has read. He said it was really good and he wants to read more of the series.
