In 1854, Rosa Barr goes to the Crimea as a nurse with Florence Nightingale. To her Cousin Marietta Lingwood, the war is sewing circles and scrapbooks, until fiance Dr. Henry becomes ill. Marietta travels to the Crimea, and finds Rosa has disappeared without a trace.

Marietta goes looking for Rosa and finds Rosa's stepbrother, a reckless cavalry officer, whose past is tied up with her own. Her ordered world falls apart, and into darkness. She learns that she has much to learn about faithfulness, love, and secrecy.
