This is my absolute favorite book from childhood. I read it in third grade, and again and again after that and I have never forgotten it.
Powerful messages about rising above the injustices in life and the importance of family.
The second book in the series, "Let the Circle Be Unbroken", is excellent as well.

This is a great book to read to your kids to explain the nastiness of prejudice and how it can effect those around you.

I read this book as an adolescent and never forgot it. A coming of age novel that deals very effectively with the complex issue of racism and prejudice.

This book exposes you to what Mississippi was back then. I enjoyed reading this book. It was a required book in my 6th grade class and I'm glad it was. I've read this book a couple times and I greatly enjoyed it. After reading this book, Mildred D. Taylor became one of my favorite author's and I picked up The Land(which is the prequel). It as well is a wonderful book. I highly recommend this book.
This book opens eyes to race relations in earlier times. Good for young readers to learn about the past prejudices and great for older readers as well.....to keep their eyes & minds open to prejudices. A keeper!
i loved this book and if you want a historical book with a purpose this is the book
My son is reading this book and really likes it.
An excellent read for adults as well as young readers. I didn't read it when it was published in 1976 thinking that at 22 I was too "adult". Like Harry Potter, though, this is a book that adults can become engrossed in. Cassie Logan is 9 years old in 1933. She lives in the south with her family during a shameful period of our past. She has to deal with extreme bigotry and racism from whites. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, though, she remains strong and proud. This story recounts a particularly strifeful year in the lives of Cassie & her family.
Great kids book - Newberry and many other awards. My kids really enjoyed it - the story of a girl named Cassie and her family enduring the depression and coping up with racism.
From the back cover: This is a story of physical survival, but more important, it is a story of the survival of the human spirit. This is Cassie's story-- Cassie Logan, a girl raised by a family determined not to surrender their independence or their humanity simply because they are black. Cassie has grown up protected, strong, and so far, unaware that any white person could consider her inferior-- or force her to be untrue to herself. It takes the events of one turbulent year to turn her safe world upside down.
This book is used in Sonlight 4.
best book that I know of for intermediate and Junior High schools!!!
with the land to hold them together, nothing can tear th Logans apart..
Great story about racism.
I read this in sixth grade and have never forgotten it.
very moving story... excellent reading material
Racism in the South after the Civil War. Theme: dignity, racism
Very powerful story of the Logan family. Worthwhile read.
Excellent!
Great read for children!
It takes the events of one turbulent year - the year of the night riders and burnings, the year a white girl humiliates Cassie in public simply because she is black - to show Cassie that having a place of their own is in the Logan family's lifeblood. It is the land that gives the Logans their courage and pride - no matter how others may degrade them.
From Amazon.com:
In all Mildred D. Taylor's unforgettable novels she recounts "not only the joy of growing up in a large and supportive family, but my own feelings of being faced with segregation and bigotry." Her Newbery Medal-winning Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry tells the story of one African American family, fighting to stay together and strong in the face of brutal racist attacks, illness, poverty, and betrayal in the Deep South of the 1930s. Nine-year-old Cassie Logan, growing up protected by her loving family, has never had reason to suspect that any white person could consider her inferior or wish her harm. But during the course of one devastating year when her community begins to be ripped apart by angry night riders threatening African Americans, she and her three brothers come to understand why the land they own means so much to their Papa. "Look out there, Cassie girl. All that belongs to you. You ain't never had to live on nobody's place but your own and long as I live and the family survives, you'll never have to. That's important. You may not understand that now but one day you will. Then you'll see."

This is a powerful book in the Mildred D. Taylor series about the Logan family. Set during the Depression, this is a vivid story forthrightly describing racism and courage. It is recommended for ages 10 and up.
a very tragic yet inspiring story
A classic! A wonderful book for any age.
This is one of my favorite books of all time. Many emotions will run through you as you read this book.
This is a Sonlight Core 4 book
I remember reading this book when I was a little girl I loved it. Very heartwarming and heartwrenching at the same time. It gives you insight of what it was like living in the times of segregation being Black. There are 2 more books in this family. I would recommend it for young readers.
I read this book for a class I was taking on Children's Literature. It's an excellent book, well worth reading many times over. It's a story about love, family, hope and the capacity for human beings to retain their sense of pride despite all the ills of the world.
Excellent book! Easy to see why it won the Newberry Medal!
Great book for adolescents
A great classic that should be read by all. Eye opening!
Very good book, I read it in Jr. High and it still is the most touching story.
One of my all time favorite books! I love the Logan family and have read everything I could find written by Mildred D. Taylor because of this book.
With the land to hold them together, nothing can tear the Logans apart. Why is the land so important to Cassie's family? It takes the events of one turbulent year-the year of the night riders and the burnings, the year a white girl humiliates Cassie in public simply because she is black-to show Cassie that having a place of their own is the Logan family's lifehood. It is the land that gives the Logans their courage and pride, for no matter how others may degrade them, the Logans possess something no one can take away.
