Updike's story presents one of the most fascinating debates on the existence of God. Compelling storytelling, but what else would we expect?

An enjoyable and readable novel of ideas, of special interest to anyone interested in skeptical theology, computer science or artificial intelligence. The book explores themes such as scientific and religious views of creation in the lives of believable characters with conflicted love affairs and self-destructive complexes. One of the best of Updike's novels.
