Outstanding history of the Apollo program, covering such diverse factors as Germany's slave-staffed V2 production facilities to the amusement park ambitions of Walt Disney, from Jules Verne to Arthur C. Clarke, from the Wright Brothers to Neil Armstrong, Nelson paints a portrait of determination, happenstance, skill and sometimes plain dumb luck. This work is exceptional in that it does not end with the Moon landing, but takes an unblinking and heartbreaking look at what happened to the program and to the men and women that built it when the goal had been achieved.

Excellent account of Apollo program, including rocketry, Russian space race, and Apollo 11 mission.
