The artifact is a entity so powerful and horrible that the Roms locked it away in a black coffin centuries ago. Some one has stolen it from them and the seals on the coffin have weakend letting the destruction out.

Definitely the roadtrip from Hell. The Rom hate Cal, but know he, Niko and Robin are the most likely to recapture the Plague of the World. This anti-healer has been their burden to keep imprisoned for centuries. Due to their arrogance and complacency he is stolen away.
Cal's werewolf with benefits, Delilah, accompanies on her motorcycle. They also meet healer Rafferty and his stuck-in-werewolf form cousin. Rafferty is needed to try to neutralize the Plague.
Due to "gating" Cal discovers that he is liking his Auphe half better. Nik fears Cal will become less and less human.
When Delilah tries to kill Rafferty and his cousin, Cal is ready to kill her to save his friends. Looks like the romance is over.
