I've been reading this series over several years and enjoying it. It came to a stop as I haven't been able to get the book immediately proceeding this one. So I decide to skip that one and read "Riverwoman's Dragon."

It's a complex tale with many subplots. And once again it concentrates on the suspicion of medieval people against native healers and mid-wives during a time of return of the plague. This is fostered to some extent by the church. As a result, Magda and Owen's wife face harassment, but Owen, as Captain of the city, doesn't put up with it. Plus, there is a lot more mysticism in this books then in previous books. Speaking of previous books, it appears one of the major villains in this book is a holdover from the book before this one, which took me a while to understand.
