I loved this book! I really enjoy period pieces that teach you a lot about a time period and this certainly fits the bill. I love the narration by the main character - the slave Taita. His constant comments about his own genius and good looks and beautiful voice are a really funny note throughout the book. You come to really feel for and root for this character. I read a lot of period books, but have read very few set in the time period of ancient Egypt. So I found this really unique -- not the same old, same old. Very refreshing. This was the first I'd ever read of Wilbur Smith and I'm now reading my way through a number of his other novels and enjoying them as well.
