As a Western writer, I think the reason Elmer Kelton won so many awards is he didn't stick to the common Western formula as so many other writers in this genre do. Not that there is anything wrong with that formula, as it's a very popular genre. But Kelton's book are often so very different you wonder is he was more than one person.

This book follows two very young brothers separated by an Indian attack. Their adventures are many and varied, and some of the events they encounter are not so nice. Still, this is a book which a young adult male would enjoy. Finally, the American Civil War in New Mexico and Texas brings them together.

My readings of that War in the West and of Western Americana are in tune with what Kelton wrote here. As such, it is more than a Western, it is also a history lesson.
