Author goes from Shanghai to Tibet, with a lot of emphasis on the at-the-time not completed 3 Gorges Dam and the displacements that will cause.

Fabulous book! Simon Winchester is one of my all-time favorite writers. I have read all of his books. This one is on my list of "FAVORITE BOOKS OF ALL TIME". We have been to China 20 times - so far, and we have cruised the Yangtze River 4 or 5 times, so this book's subject matter was something we truly enjoyed. The writing is crisp, interesting, very well written and Winchester's sense of humor makes it even more enjoyable. I can honestly recommend anything written by Simon Winchester. You won't be disappointed.

Terrific book - his travel writing is quite funny, in a dry British way, and the history is well-presented, with only a few dry spots.
