I forget when I first became enamored about wolves. It must have been in my teens. Why? I have no idea. But I read a lot about them and, due to later getting a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries, realized getting rid of them was a major ecological mistake. I still have a number of books about them. And I was happy to find this one, as the Yellowstone Wolf reintroduction proved how valuable wolves were to ecology. And, as many in that area have discovered, to profit too.

This book follows several bands of wolves, starting with the first re-introduction. It closely follows the wolves getting used to their new habitat and it really covers how wolves interact with each other. This last may be a major problem for many readers as the author repeats the same analysis of wolf interaction---meeting each other, pairing off, caring and training of puppies and yearlings, pack fights, etc.---over and over and over. I think unless the reader is very interested in wolves this may bore many.

Anyway, as result of his endless description of wolf behavior I decided to try it myself. I saw some yearlings---young kids---passing outside my house and I picked up a stick with my mouth, tossed it in the air and caught it again and challenged them to take it from me. As they then ran down the street yelling "Mommy!" I realized they were trying to reconnect with their alpha female.

Then later, when I was at a store, I walked up to an attractive young woman and nipped her ear, licked her face and affectionately laid my jaw on her shoulder. She obviously never read this book as my first court appearance is next week.
