This is Book 2 of The Companions Codex.

Honestly, it's getting hard to keep all of these books straight. While I was never a huge fan of the pseudo-Companions Drizzt tagged along with in the Neverwinter books, I did appreciate the fact that they did, at the very least, offer something different. I am glad that the Companions are back together again, but the novelty of the reunion is already starting to wear thin.

In truth, there are only so many plot combinations that you can assemble after so many books and with the same limited number of characters. I enjoy the familiarity I have with the Companions, but that is also the problem. I can't seem to approach the books with the same sense of wonder and adventure that I had in the beginning because it feels like everything that is happening now has happened a hundred other times before.

In terms of the story itself, I found all of the chapters surrounding the plotting, planning, and infighting among the drow more confusing than captivating, and I found that I didn't really care enough to spend a lot of time trying to figure it all out.

Rise of the King wasn't a bad book, and it was certainly better than many of the books that came before. The problem is that there just wasn't much to make it stand out, either.
