In a classroom, this is a good book for a student to read a chapter of his/her choice and then share with the group. There is a pronunciation guide for those of you who are not a 'child of the Southwest.'
One clever author wrote of 7th graders ;publishing a book as a fundraiser with alternate chapters being from their book. This is a new individual learning program, the 'Heritage Project' at the school now configured as a magnet school, with students learning across several subjects.
Apparently, most of the students previously attending this school got the boot. The students are from varying backgrounds and have different stories to tell. Sadly, the plot of this book would not be believable in LA Unified as most non-Latino immigrant students have been chased away since the passage of the Immigration Act of 1965.
