The authors consider that people with learning disabilities and their carers may have distinct needs, although not necessarily in opposition. The research found that: only 35 carers of people with lea... more »rning disabilities in five different areas had received a carer's needs assessment in a one-year period; those who did receive an assessment of their needs generally appreciated it; and approximately one year later, only 18 of the 42 services that were discussed at the assessment had been delivered. The report deals with complex issues, and contains many case examples and practical recommendations for the development of better service delivery. It seeks to add to the understanding of such families, and highlights the mismatch between policy, practice and need in this area.« less
