ISBN 0670806234 - It's hard to find a kids' book that doesn't have at least a few redeeming qualities, but this one does come close. Since it's adapted from an old cowboy song, I really wanted to like it more, but it's just not very good.
A young bronc buster with a great record (but no job) is offered the chance to break the strawberry roan. From the start, he seems to have little hope of success, but he does get a wild, wild ride.
The illustrations by Sewall are exciting, if not spectacular. A fun tall tale that budding young cowboys (and girls!) might enjoy, but bring your dictionary, because you're going to have to define "shoat" and "spavined". For the correct-grammar parents, this one might drive you insane, with "I puts on my spurs" and "I takes a deep seat...".
